Islamic Sharia law was reintroduced in Katsina State in August 2001, making it one of a dozen mainly Muslim northern states to readopt the code since Nigeria's return to civilian rule in 1999. • BANGKOK — Last weekend’s Nation circuit party, an international gay festival, drew more than 2,000 people to the Thai resort island of Phuket after being banned from Singapore, The three-day fest included nine events spread across the weekend and kicked off a week of activities for Gay Pride in Thailand, which ends with a Nov. 13 parade in Bangkok. The party, organized by gay Web site Fridae.com, was expected to fall short of the crowd of 8,000 people who attended last year’s event in Singapore, where the event originated five years ago. The party was banned in Singapore after police ruled it “contrary to public interest.” Agence France-Presse reported.

The men were preparing to stage the competition on Thursday night, the first day of the Muslim festival Eid al-Fitr, when police raided the hotel they were in, forcing many contestants and guests to flee, leaving behind shoes and head scarves. • MADRID SPAIN One of Spain's highest courts has agreed to hear a challenge to the country's marriage law, which gives same-sex couples the right to wed. The Constitutional Court made the decision Friday, after it was asked by opposition parties to decide if the law is unconstitutional. Gay marriage was legalized in the country in June, to the dismay of religious and conservative leaders. However, it was backed by members of Parliament and the majority of Spaniards.

• SYDNEY AUSTRALIA Radio station 2DayFM has sparked controversy amongst listeners after organizing a gay wedding for its breakfast show newsreader last week. Geoff Field, newsreader on the popular Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O show, received a marriage proposal on-air by his partner of 13 years, Jason Kerr. The program has since promoted the upcoming nuptials as “ Sydney ’s First Illegal Gay Wedding”. The event will take place on Friday 25 November with a Metropolitan Community Church minister presiding over the ceremony at Circular Quay.  The overall response to their impending wedding had been amazing.

• HAARETZ ISRAEL  A third Israeli same-sex couple petitioned the High Court of Justice on Tuesday, demanding that their marriage be registered in Israel. This follows two gay couples who are seeking to have their Canadian nuptials recognized by the government's Population Registry.  Jonathan Herland, 29, and Ayal Wallrauch, 26, have lived together for two years. Herland is Canadian, and he immigrated to Israel four years ago, according to the Haaretz newspaper. The two were married in July 2004 in a civil ceremony in Toronto.
